So, I know a lot of you have seen me posting about becoming a doula. I know some of y’all have been like, āWhat in the world?!ā Donāt lie. I see you! One of my friends even asked me if I was gonna be hustling babies. My people are so shady. LOL!
Anyway, there is no shame in my game. Yep, Iām stepping into the world of becoming a doula. For those you who have no idea what Iām talking about and are too lazy to Google it, here is the dictionary definition of a doula-Ā “a woman who is trained to assist another woman during childbirth and who may provide support to the family after the baby is born.”
So, now you know. Iāve been praying and meditating for a year about my next step and this is what came up for me, thanks to a post from my girl Latham Thomas about her Mama Glow Doula Training program.
When Latham posted about it, I felt very connected to the idea. Since a lot of what I do is about mentoring women, I thought, whatās more special to a woman than delivering a baby? Itās truly a beautiful and sacred act.
I signed up for Lathamās course and Iām so glad I did. And little did I know that Iād also become part of a social justice movement. It turns out that women of color are actually dying while trying to have babies. Itās horrible. Latham is fighting for “birth equity” because the Black maternal mortality rate in the USA is 56% while the White maternal mortality rate is less than 5%.Ā FYI, maternal mortality is when mothers die from preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth.
Itās terrifying that so many of us are dying during childbirth as compared to our White counterparts. Iāll save my rant about why this is happening for another post but, for now, Iām looking forward to being an advocate for women of color who just want to have a baby without endangering their lives. Hope youāll join me on my new journey!
