Don’t Mess With My Playtime!

So, I gotta be honest. I was in complete denial of how much I really need to carve out some playtime for myself!

As many of you have probably noticed, recently my social media has been nothing but beach days and fun vacationing LOL!

Why? Because I spent the last 18 months rebuilding myself!

Listen, I moved twice and started a whole new– very demanding– new career. I mean, holding space for mothers can be emotionally and physically draining at times. And that’s separate from the intensive workshops that I conduct in women’s shelters.

Part of the reason I came to the realization that I need more fun in my life is because of the friendships I’ve cultivated along the way.

Like many of you, sometimes I get stuck inside my head and have my moments of fear and sadness and feeling like I’m not doing enough. I have to constantly remind myself that I’m right where I need to be and having supportive friends are great for that. My girls are quick to remind me that it’s break time. LOL!

Here are my tips for creating balance in your life:

1. Get on a schedule. Here’s a fun fact about me. I schedule everything. Yes, everything, from baths to sex. I don’t know how many times couples have told me that they haven’t had sex in months. I’m always like, “how the hell does that happen?” In my life, if it’s not on my schedule it doesn’t happen.

2. Smell the flowers. Over time, I’ve learned to enjoy the little things, like a walk in the park or the fact that my subway ride to work allows me to look over Brooklyn Bridge. It’s a stunning view but most people on my train are staring at their phones.

3. Protect your time. Listen, I am unapologetic about protecting my time. I will definitely cut you off if you fuck with my time!! If you waste your time, you can’t get it back.

4. Don’t forget to play. I’ve come to realize that when I give myself some playtime, whether that means meditation, or going to the beach, or having sex with somebody son  it allows me to be a better person, a better friend, a better doula, and a better daughter.

Enjoy the rest of the summer!
