Yeah, so, let’s just say that this year’s Thanksgiving was VERY different than usual. I actually spent Thanksgiving eve at the hospital! Don’t get worried. I wasn’t hurt or anything. I was there to help my first doula client have her baby. Awww! 🙂
When I arrived at the hospital, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Thanks to Latham Thomas, I felt well-prepared but, let’s keep it real, training and preparation is a whole lot different than the real thing. Anyway, I came in the door with oils and a lotus flower arrangement (lol!) but all I really needed was the pure intention to help and support.
I’m not gonna lie, things got tough. This baby decided not to come for a whole day later than expected! I chose to stay close to my client by spending the night in the hospital on the hard floor in a makeshift bed made out of hospital blankets. The next day, my client went from calm cool and collected to frazzled and stressed as the hours kept ticking by. Plus, she was in a lot of pain. I felt so sorry for her and I did everything I could to help. When the doctor started talking about a C-section I wasn’t sure that I’d be able to help any more but the baby must have heard our combined prayers and decided to come on out! lol!
Thankfully, I was able to stay through the whole thing and make mommy and her new baby feel calm and secure. Bonus, I made it home to see my mom for Thanksgiving– I wasn’t sure I was going to make it for a while there! I left my client and her new baby In the caring arms of my client’s parents who also came to help her through.
Honestly, I can’t think of a better, more impactful way to spend Thanksgiving. It was truly the best confirmation that I have chosen the right path for myself.
